Last night, Steve and I decided to take the kids for a walk. Riley was strapped in the stroller, Jack got his bike and off we went. We have taken walks on this sidewalk 500 times. The sidewalk runs along 3 different ponds. The ground slopes down a hill into the ponds. When we got to the second pond, I said to Steve "you don't think he could fall in do you"? Steve says,"no way...he'd fall over before he would go into the pond." Yeah right!
At the third pond, the slope is pretty steep. Jack was about 20 feet in front of us and was distracted by some geese. Just as I was about to say "watch where you are going," his front tire veered off the sidewalk and somehow he got himself perfectly aimed toward the lake.
As soon as he started to roll down the slope, I ran straight for the pond, too. I knew he was going in, so I was full speed ahead. Do you ever have those dreams where you are trying to save your kids' from a monster or giant bird (no?!? well, I do) and you can't pick up your feet, or you are in slow motion? That's how I felt. I saw the look of sheer panic in his face as he yelled "Heeelllllppp mmmeeeee" and I hit the water right just after he did. I pulled him out of the water and then had to fish around the murky water for the bike.
Needless to say he was scared to death. And so was I. We sat on the bank shivering and I am not sure who was crying more. I think it may be a day or two before he wants to go for a bike ride. Steve ran home and got the truck because we were wearing heavy soaking wet clothes and I don't think either one of us would have made it home on our shaky legs. We rode on the tailgate home because we were too stinky and gross to get in the truck. He thought that was so cool and pretty much got over the drama right them and there. Me on the other hand...I am still seeing his little face as he was going in. Very, very scary. Not something a mother can erase from her mind.
So as he was in the shower washing off the fishy-goose-poop-murky pond water, true to form he says, "Mom, I think I want to do that again because I think there was a whale in that water."
So if you see Jack riding his bike with his water-wings on, now you know why.
